Overview of challenges in the sector

COVID-19 impact

The economic crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic is having a strong impact on smallholder farmers in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Increase technology offers

The number of fintech and agritech companies has increased significantly in recent years in Latin America and the Caribbean, yet their offer for people who work in agriculture is still limited.

Access to value/supply chains

Around 20 million households inhabited by small-scale producers or family farmers need access to technology, credit, markets, and services to be included in value chains.

Guarantee generational change

The average age of people engaged in agricultural activities is very high, which worsens the digital divide and leads to a low adoption of new technologies in the sector.

Through this virtual project, financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and implemented by German Sparkassenstiftung, we aim to help smallholder farmers recover faster and more resiliently from the impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be done by linking these producers to technology companies that provide them with a better access to markets and financial services.
